At the invitation of UNEP, Bahrain Women Association-for Human Development (BWA) represented by its Board Member, Eng. Saba Al Asfoor, attended the Annual Major Groups & Partners Consultative Meeting for the West Asia region which was held in Amman, Jordan from 27th-28th November, 2013.
The purpose of the meeting was to review the outputs of the Earth Summit (Rio+20) held in 2012 in Brazil and to discuss the outputs of the Civil Society Organizations’ (CSO) Annual meeting at the Governing Council in Nairobi this year.
Similarly to every year’s meetings, a session was dedicated for the UNEP’s representative to illustrate the United Nation’s structure and the respective role of each division. The representative addressed the role of the United Nation Environment Assembly (UNEA) in promoting the international environmental cooperation and coordination of various environmental activities within the United Nations system.
A draft statement was issued by the Civil Society organizations’ delegates highlighting major issues that are crucial and important for the West Asia region which need to be discussed during the UNEP meeting in Nairobi in 2014,
As a complement to this meeting, The Arab League arranged a meeting wilth a long title! “The role of Civil Society Organizations in the Arab Strategy for Water Security in the Arab world and the Challenges and Future Requirements for Sustainable Development”. The meeting was concluded with unanimous consent between the CSO to take part in strategy & policy planning.
