BWA vice president Dr. Wajeeha Al Baharna participated in ” Gender Justice and equality” conference organized by Egyptian Foundation for Family Development in collaboration with the Swiss Institution in Alexandria, on 16-17 May 2016. Participants from various civil society organizations, religious institutions such as Department of Awqaf and Al-Azhar, and the National Council for Women, who all met to discuss the importance of compiling Islamic knowledge from gender justice perspective, which can be achieved by revisiting interpretation methodologies and approaches, to provide a new ethical vision enforcing justice and human dignity and providing equal opportunities for both women and men. Discussions emphasized on the following themes: Gender justice in religious.. knowledge and practice, the right to be present equally in religious holy places, and the active social role of religious institutions and scholars.
Dr. Al Baharna participated with a paper which highlighted the concealed humanitarian role of women and the importance of recognizing this role as she is equal to man in human rights and responsibilities, also in terms of carrying the succession secretariat and all its burden on earth. She provided a practical model for this role in “Woman Testimony”.
The dialogue was distinguished with openness, transparency and acceptance of different opinions, and exchange of others expertise, which greatly contributed to enrichment of intellectual discussions that resulted in tangible practical results which was recommended by participants as next steps forward, to be the platform based on which the process of change will be built to achieve gender equity for women.
