Organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the League of Arab States and the United Nations Organization for Women, the workshop was held in Beirut on August 12th and 13th. This workshop was the second among a series of planned events in support of the review of Implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in the Arab Region. The meeting brought together relevant civil society organizations from throughout the Arab Region to solicit input on progress achieved in the region on the implementation of Beijing Platform for Action over the last 5 years. The meeting also involved a discussion of methodological and analytical frameworks of national shadow reports that some civil society organizations might consider preparing. The meeting also discussed obstacles, accomplishments and future plans.
Engineer Asma Rajab member of BWA participated in this workshop by presenting an intervention highlighting the most prominent contributions of Bahrain civil society organizations in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform during past twenty years.
It is worth mentioning that the Beijing Platform for Action is a global framework for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. The Platform for Action calls governments, the international community, and civil society, including NGOs and the private sector, to take strategic actions in the following critical areas of concern: poverty, education and training, health, violence, armed conflict, economy, power and decision-making mechanisms institutional advancement of women, human rights, media, environment and children.
