Intervention of President of Bahrain Women Association in the meeting of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

At the close of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights event, held at the Movenpick Hotel in Muharraq on 29th April 2014, and at the end of the national consultation program to view the challenges and give recommendations on the preparation for the capacity building program in human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Wajeeha Albaharna -President of Bahrain Women Association- emphasized in a written intervention on the need to appreciate the effective and vital role – played by civil society organizations in enriching development programs and reinforcing of human rights, by considering them as an active partner through which the work with official institutions integrates, and to guide Ministry of Social Development and the relevant official bodies the mandated role of these organizations, through periodic consultative meetings held between civil society organizations and the Ministry of Social Development to review related policies, legislation and programs, and take in consideration their suggestions and views in relevant legislations before ratification, and to provide financial and other support to these organizations.

Albaharna noted the importance of placing women and their humane rights issues among  national priorities, and avoid politicizing women’s issues and use them to pass political agendas.

At the end of her intervention, Albaharna mentioned the principle of citizenship and practicing it, to be the ‘Common Word’ under which all citizens are equal in their rights without discrimination due to race, creed , religion or sex and to give women special attention in this regard sense they do not enjoy full citizenship as a result of some discriminatory laws.
