Dr. Wajeeha Albaharna President of Bahrain Women Association participated in Intercultural Dialogue & Culture of Dialogue in the Middle-East” held in Beirut- Lebanon from 21-22 March 2013, organized by UNESCO and Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF).
The following was addressed at the conference: culture and dialogue concept, peace concept from a cultural perspective, the importance of dialogue for all students and workers in different areas of life and for internal and international conflict resolution. The conference speakers focused on the importance of education for peace, gender equality for womens progress taking into consideration the women’s status in our societies, the role of the media in promoting the dialogue required by our society as a whole.
Under the session: “Gender equality and the status of women” Dr. Albaharna presented a paper “Challenges and Opportunities for Women in the Arab Gulf Region”. The session clarifies how womens issues in the Arab world are similar and shares same challenges, while women in some Gulf countries poses unique huge challenges which hinders them to enjoy their human rights, and to participate actively in community development, and this situation have different reasons behind it.
In her paper “Challenges and Opportunities for Women in the Arab Gulf Region”, BWA President highlighted the status of women in the Gulf states during the winds of change and transformations, and pinpointed the major challenges they faced, and then she diagnosed the causes of such obstacles. She concluded suggesting fundamental and practical solutions to improve the women status in general and their integration into development programs to achieve better situation for the next generations.
The last session was for the speakers to share their personal experiences in light of the dialogue and peace.
