As part of the Women and Social Responsibility conference – 2017, the Regional Network for Social Responsibility (CSR) -member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNPAN), BWA Vice President Dr. Wajeeha Al Baharna, was granted ‘Responsible Excellence’ award in Humanitarian Contributions for community service, for her distinguished efforts in community services. The event was held under the patronage of Her Excellency Sheikha Lamia Bint Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, on March 16-17, 2017.
Al Baharna delivered a presentation at the conference, in which she presented the concept of sustainable philanthropy based on empowerment, support, education, training, and capacity building, in oppose of direct charity, which solely depends on the monetary provision or in-kind assistance. She mentioned that the most prominent challenge facing sustainable philanthropy is people’s view that money is what makes the difference, whereas, in fact, education and information are what make the difference, people tend to pay money because they see immediate and apparent results, and this gives a sense of comfort that one did a good job and can live more comfortably.
Al Bahrna also mentioned that women are responsible for the succession of the land/earth, and they are responsible for building and developing the resources. Women’s awareness of this great role marks all their work through different roles as distinctive and valuable.
Al Baharna concluded by stating the importance of keeping up with the latest developments in the world, identifying regional and international organizations, and networking with them to gain experience, knowledge and exchange experiences. She pointed out BWA experience in obtaining consultative status with the United Nations and its impact on achieving change at an international level, after its success locally.
