At the invitation of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions, board member of Bahrain Women Association and Bahrain Women Union, the Engineer Ms Saba ALasfoor, participated with a paper entitled “Contributions of Arab Women in Sustainable Development”, in the second working’ women conference held on 8-9 December 2014 at Crown Plaza Hotel . The Conference was attended by Minister of Labour, Mr. Jameel Humaidan, number of activists’ men and women along with other stakeholders from different civil society institutions and other organizations.
Ms. Alasfoor highlighted the importance of the ‘Gender Gap’ subject, the role of the care economy in the calculation of the hidden cost of non-paid work. Also, she mentioned the rise in the poverty rate among the women, which is due to increased burdens carried out by women and lack of equal opportunities in education and employment and ownership of assets and others, she explained, in addition to the fact that they do not possess the freedom to dispose their money and property.
Ms. Alasfoor concluded her paper by stating the importance of the role of civil society organizations in bridging the gender gap by taking advantage of the “gender gap index” report and build on it, she also recommended the adoption of gender responsive budgets, the importance of taking into account the hidden cost of the care economy in the preparation of the development strategies, she emphasized.
